§ 110775 Food Label Tampering Ban

Key Takeaways

  • •You can't mess with food labels in a way that makes the food seem like something it's not.
  • •This includes tearing, covering up, or removing parts of the label.
  • •If you do this, the food becomes 'misbranded,' which is against the law.

Example

You buy a jar of peanut butter, but you don't like the brand name on the label. You peel off the label and stick on a different one from a fancy brand.

This is illegal because you changed the label, and now the jar looks like a different product. The food is now 'misbranded' because the label doesn't match what's inside.
