§ 9922 Committee Creation And Membership

Key Takeaways

  • •Committees in the Senate and Assembly are created by rules that need two-thirds of the members to agree.
  • •Each committee must have members from different parties in the same ratio as the whole house.
  • •The majority party picks its own members for the committee, and the minority party picks its own members.
  • •The Rules Committee in each house handles the money and expenses for all other committees.

Example

Imagine the Assembly has 100 members: 60 from Party A and 40 from Party B.

If a new committee is created with 10 members, it must have 6 members from Party A and 4 from Party B to match the ratio of the whole Assembly. Party A picks its 6 members, and Party B picks its 4 members.
