§ 18520 County Payment Appropriation Rules

Key Takeaways

  • •The state won't automatically pay counties money just because this law exists.
  • •The state has to officially decide to give money first before any payments can happen.
  • •If the state does give money, it goes into a special fund called the Relief Fund.

Example

Imagine your school wants to buy new playground equipment.

Just because there's a rule saying the school *can* buy new equipment doesn't mean they have the money yet. The school board has to actually approve the money first. Once they do, the money goes into a special account just for that.

§ 18520 County Payment Appropriation Rules

The provisions of this chapter providing for state payments to counties do not constitute appropriations of money from the State Treasury, and no provision of this chapter shall be construed to make an appropriation. No money shall be available for expenditure under this chapter until an appropriation for that purpose is made by the Legislature. Any money appropriated to carry out the purposes of this chapter shall be deposited in, and disbursed from, the Relief Fund in the State Treasury, which fund is continued in existence.
