§ 1231 Grade Crossing Protection Funding

Key Takeaways

  • •The state gives money to cities and counties to help pay for safety stuff at train crossings (like gates or lights).
  • •The state will only pay up to half of what the city or county has to spend on these projects.
  • •The state decides who gets money based on who needs it most.
  • •The money can be used anytime—it doesn’t have to be spent in one year.

Example

A small town wants to put up safety gates at a train crossing where lots of cars pass.

The town figures out the project will cost $200,000. The state can give them up to $100,000 (half of the cost), but the town has to pay the other $100,000 themselves.
