§ 1172 District Boundary Requirements

This law says a voting district has to stay completely inside one county and its pieces must all touch each other.

Key Takeaways

  • •A district cannot include land from more than one county.
  • •All parts of the district must be next to each other (contiguous).
  • •The district can be a mix of city (incorporated) and countryside (unincorporated) land, or it can be all city land or all countryside land.

Example

A city that spreads over two counties wants to create a school district.

The school district can only include the part of the city that is in one county, plus any nearby countryside in that same county, or it can be just the city part or just the countryside part, but it cannot cross into the other county.
