§ 1174 District Formation Petition Requirements

This law tells you how to ask the county board to create a new memorial district, including who must sign the petition and what information it must contain.

Key Takeaways

  • •The petition must be sent to the county board of supervisors.
  • •It needs the exact number of voter signatures required by section 1173.
  • •It must say the district will be formed, ask for a special election, give the district’s name, and describe its boundaries.

Example

A neighborhood wants to set up a "Jane Smith Memorial District" to fund a community garden.

The residents gather the required number of voter signatures, write a petition that names the district, asks the board to hold a special election, and describes exactly where the district’s borders are. They send it to the county board, which then decides whether to hold the election and pick the first directors.
