§ 110720 Food Labeling Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •If a food doesn't have a standard name (like 'apple' or 'bread'), it must have a label that says what it really is.
  • •The label must use the name that most people know the food by.
  • •If the food doesn't have a label like this, it's considered misbranded (which means it's breaking the rules).

Example

You buy a bag of chips at the store, but the bag doesn't say what kind of chips are inside.

The bag must have a label that says something like 'potato chips' or 'tortilla chips' so you know what you're buying. If it doesn't, the store is breaking the rules.
