§ 103626 Domestic Violence Fee Increase

This law lets Contra Costa County raise the cost of getting certified copies of marriage, birth, fetal death, and death records, first up to $4 and then each year by the amount the local CPI went up, rounded to the nearest 50‑cent.

Key Takeaways

  • •The Board can raise the fee by up to $4 if it finds a need for more oversight of domestic‑violence agencies.
  • •Each July, the Board may add an amount equal to the previous year’s CPI increase, rounded to the nearest 50‑cent.
  • •Applicants for birth, fetal death, or death records also have to pay any extra local fee the Board sets.

Example

Maria needs a certified copy of her son's birth certificate. The county decides to raise the fee because the cost of living went up last year.

The Board can add the CPI‑based increase to the current fee, and Maria will also have to pay any extra local charge the county sets.

How to Calculate

New fee increase = CPI increase for the San Francisco metro area (from the previous year), rounded to the nearest $0.50.

  1. Find the CPI increase amount for the San Francisco metro area for the last calendar year (e.g., 2.3%).
  2. Convert that percentage into a dollar amount that matches the current fee (if the fee is $20, 2.3% of $20 = $0.46).
  3. Round the dollar amount to the nearest half‑dollar (e.g., $0.46 rounds to $0.50).
  4. Add that rounded amount to the existing fee (e.g., $20 + $0.50 = $20.50).

The current fee for a certified birth certificate is $20. The CPI for the San Francisco area rose 2.3% last year.

Result: New fee = $20 + $0.50 = $20.50
