§ 874 Seaman Wages After Death

Key Takeaways

  • •If a sailor dies while working on a ship, their family gets the money they earned up to when they died.
  • •The family only gets the money if the sailor would have gotten it if they had finished the trip.
  • •This rule is for sailors and ship workers, not other jobs.

Example

A fisherman works on a boat and dies in an accident halfway through the trip.

His family gets the money he earned for the days he worked before he died. If he was supposed to get paid at the end of the trip, his family gets that money now.
