§ 870 Seaman Wages After Wreck

Key Takeaways

  • •If a ship sinks or is wrecked, the crew still gets paid for the work they did until the accident happened.
  • •The crew must have tried their best to save the ship, its cargo, and supplies to get their full pay.
  • •It doesn’t matter if the ship was carrying goods for money or not—the crew still gets their wages.

Example

A fishing boat hits a storm and sinks. The crew worked hard to save the boat and the fish they caught before it went down.

Even though the boat sank and the fish were lost, the crew still gets paid for all the time they worked before the accident because they tried their best to save everything.
