§ 20504 Reciprocal System Employee Inclusion

Key Takeaways

  • •A special group (like a company or organization) can change its contract to let more workers join their system.
  • •The change only affects workers who choose to join in the future, not workers who were left out before.
  • •The group doesn’t have to pay for any past time when those workers weren’t included.

Example

A school district had a rule that only full-time teachers could join their retirement plan. Now, they want to let part-time teachers join too.

The school district can change their contract to include part-time teachers from now on. But they don’t have to pay retirement benefits for the years those part-time teachers worked before the change.
