§ 17206 Warrant Cancellation Procedure

• •If a government check is sent by mistake or for the wrong reason, the agency that owns it can ask to cancel it.
• •The agency must tell the Controller why they want to cancel the check and where the money should go back to.
• •This is only for checks the government sent, not regular people or businesses.

A school gets a check from the state for new computers, but the check was sent by mistake because the school didn’t ask for it.

The school can send the check back to the Controller with a note saying, ‘This was sent by mistake, please cancel it and put the money back where it came from.’
