§ 71101 Rice Handler Referendum Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •This law only starts working if enough rice handlers and producers vote 'yes' in a special vote.
  • •At least 40% of all rice handlers must vote, and either 65% of them must agree OR the ones who agree must have handled most of the rice last year.
  • •At least 40% of all rice producers must vote, and either 65% of them must agree OR the ones who agree must have grown most of the rice last year.
  • •If not enough people vote or agree, the law doesn’t start.

Example

Imagine a group of rice farmers and sellers voting on a new rule for how rice is sold.

The rule only starts if enough of them vote 'yes.' For example, if 100 rice sellers exist, at least 40 must vote. Then, either 65 of those 40 must say 'yes,' OR the ones who say 'yes' must have sold more than half of all the rice last year. The same goes for rice farmers.
