§ 6036 Crop Damage Assessment Rates

Key Takeaways

  • •Farmers in different areas may pay different fees to protect their crops from a virus called curly top.
  • •The fee depends on how much risk the crop has and how much protection is given.
  • •The total money collected from farmers should cover the cost of the protection program but not exceed 65% of what the government spends on it.

Example

A farmer grows sugar beets in a place where curly top virus is common.

The farmer will pay a fee to help protect their crops. The fee is different depending on where the farm is and how much the crops need protection. The money from all farmers helps pay for the program that controls the beet leafhopper, which spreads the virus.
