§ 12202 License Renewal Penalties

This law says a license ends on December 31 of the year it was given, and you can renew it early by filling out a form and paying a fee; if you try to renew after it’s expired, you’ll get a penalty.

Key Takeaways

  • •Licenses automatically end on December 31 of the year they were issued.
  • •You can renew early by using the director’s form and paying the required fee.
  • •If you try to renew after the license has expired, you will be charged a penalty.

Example

Jane’s driver’s license was set to end on December 31, 2023. She waits until January 10, 2024 to apply for renewal.

Because Jane applied after the license had already expired, the law says she will have to pay an extra penalty on top of the normal renewal fee.
