Key Takeaways

  • •A committee member can pick someone else (an alternate) to take their place if they can't go to a meeting.
  • •The alternate can only vote if the member who picked them gives written permission.
  • •The alternate has to follow the same rules as the regular member.
  • •The alternate can only vote if the regular member isn't there.

Example

A member of a school committee can't go to a meeting about new school rules.

They can pick another parent to go instead. But that parent can only vote if the member gives them a note saying it's okay, and only if the member isn't at the meeting.
