§ 21621 District Boundary Adjustments

Key Takeaways

  • •If a city decides to elect its council members by districts, or after every 10-year census if they already do, the council must set new boundaries for those districts.
  • •The council has to do this by making a new rule or decision (called an ordinance or resolution).
  • •The new district lines must follow the rules in Chapter 2 of the law, starting at Section 21100.

Example

After the 2030 census, a city with district-based elections must redraw its council district lines.

The city council has to meet and decide on new boundaries for each district to make sure they are fair and follow the rules. If they don’t do this, they could be breaking the law.
