§ 21601 Council District Boundary Adoption

Key Takeaways

  • •If a city decides to elect its council members by districts, or after every 10-year census if they already do, the council must draw new district lines.
  • •The new district lines must be approved by the council through a local law or official decision.
  • •The district lines must follow the rules in Chapter 2 of the law, starting at Section 21100.

Example

After the 2030 census, a city with district-based council elections must redraw its district boundaries.

The city council has to create new district lines based on the census data and approve them officially. They can't just keep the old lines—they have to update them to make sure each district has a fair number of people.
