§ 22703 Service Credit Limitation

Key Takeaways

  • •Teachers get retirement credit for the work they do, but only up to a full school year (1.000).
  • •If a teacher works more than a full school year in one year, the extra work doesn’t count for their main retirement plan. Instead, the extra money they and their boss pay goes to a special extra plan.
  • •Teachers who worked before July 1, 1956, get retirement benefits based on the old rules from that time.
  • •Some changes to this law only started if the cost of living went up by at least 3.5% in a certain year.

Example

A teacher works extra hours and teaches summer school.

If the teacher works more than a full school year, the extra time doesn’t add to their main retirement. The money they and their school pay for that extra time goes to a different retirement plan instead.
