§ 494 Common Carrier Rate Compliance

Key Takeaways

  • •Companies that transport people or things (like buses or trucks) must charge the same price to everyone for the same service.
  • •They can't give special discounts or privileges to some people unless they give the same to everyone.
  • •They can't give back any part of the money they charged unless a special group (the commission) says it's okay.
  • •This rule doesn't apply to big train companies (network railroads).

Example

You and your friend take the same bus to school every day. The bus company charges you $2 per ride but charges your friend only $1.

This is not allowed. The bus company must charge the same price to everyone for the same ride. If they don't, they are breaking the law.
