§ 40601 Transit District Annexation Terms

Key Takeaways

  • •A transit district can join another district if the bigger district agrees to take them in.
  • •The bigger district must promise to give good or better bus/train service to the smaller area.
  • •People in the smaller area shouldn’t have to pay way more taxes than the services they get are worth.
  • •If all these things are true, the two districts work out a deal to make it happen.

Example

A small town has its own little bus system, but the big city next door has a much better one with more routes and newer buses.

The small town can ask to join the big city’s bus system if the big city says yes, promises to run good buses in the small town, and doesn’t make the small-town people pay way too much in taxes for it.
