§ 29038 District Service Rate Setting

Key Takeaways

  • •The board decides how much to charge for services, but they need at least two-thirds of the board to agree.
  • •The money from these charges must cover day-to-day costs, like paying workers and keeping things running.
  • •The money must also pay for fixing and taking care of things the district owns, like buses or trains.
  • •After paying for the important stuff, any extra money can be used for other things the board thinks are needed.

Example

A city bus system needs to set fares for riders.

The board votes to set the bus fare at $2 per ride. This money pays for bus drivers, gas, and fixing buses when they break. If there’s money left, they might use it to buy new buses or add more bus routes.
