§ 15963 District Unit Boundaries

Key Takeaways

  • •A group of leaders (called the board of directors) decides the borders of areas that are not part of any city but are inside a special district.
  • •They follow rules from a different part of the law (Chapter 8 of Division 21 in the Elections Code) to do this.
  • •This rule was updated in 1998 and started being used in 1999.

Example

Imagine a big piece of land outside of any city, like a large rural area. The people in charge need to draw lines to divide this land into smaller sections.

The board of directors will look at the rules in the Elections Code to figure out how to draw these lines fairly. They might consider things like how many people live in each section to make sure everyone is represented equally.
