§ 15956 Director At Large Designation

Key Takeaways

  • •People running for director positions must say which specific director spot they want on all official papers and ballots.
  • •Each director spot is numbered (like Director at Large #1, #2, etc.) based on how many directors need to be picked.
  • •The board can make a rule that says candidates don’t have to pick a numbered spot. Instead, the people with the most votes across the whole district win the director spots.

Example

A school district is electing 3 directors. Five people are running for these spots.

If the board didn’t make a special rule, each candidate would have to pick a specific spot (like Director #1, #2, or #3) when they sign up. But if the board made the rule in (b), the candidates don’t pick a number. Instead, the 3 people who get the most votes from the whole district win the director spots.

§ 15956 Director At Large Designation

(a) Candidates for directors at large shall be designated in all declarations of candidacy, nominating certificates, and on all official election ballots as candidates for a particular directorship at large, in accordance with the declarations of candidacy which the candidates have filed with the county elections official or the clerk of the district, as the case may be. Each office of director at large shall be designated as “director at large” number one, number two, number three, or number four, there being as many numbers as there are directors at large to be elected. (b) Notwithstanding subdivision (a) or any other provision of this article, the board of directors of a district may adopt an ordinance that requires that candidates for directors at large need not designate a numbered office. The ordinance shall instead require that the candidates receiving the greatest number of votes districtwide as there are directors to be elected shall be elected to the board of directors. (Amended by Stats. 2009, Ch. 14, Sec. 1. (SB 673) Effective January 1, 2010.)
