§ 11611 District Formation Petition

This law lets people use a signed petition instead of a formal resolution when dealing with the board of supervisors of the county that has the most voters in a proposed district.

Key Takeaways

  • •A petition can replace a resolution.
  • •The petition must go to the board of supervisors of the county with the most voters in the proposed district.
  • •It needs signatures from voters equal to at least 10% of the total votes cast in that district.

Example

A community wants to change the boundaries of a school district. Instead of filing a formal resolution, they gather signatures from voters in that area.

If the signatures equal at least 10% of all the votes that were cast in the last election for that area, they can hand the petition to the board of supervisors of the county that has the most voters in the proposed district.
