§ 103 Marine Property Insurance Coverage

This law says marine insurance protects against loss or damage to ships, vehicles, cargo, money, valuables and other property when they are being moved by sea, land, or air, but it does not cover personal injury or life insurance.

Key Takeaways

  • •Covers vessels, cars, aircraft, cargo, money, securities, and precious items during transport, storage, packing, war risks, etc.
  • •Includes losses that happen on water, land, or in the air, and even while items are being prepared for shipment.
  • •Does not include insurance for bodily injury, life insurance, or surety bonds; inland marine also covers non‑commercial pleasure boats.

Example

A family ships their car and a box of jewelry from the United States to Europe on a cargo ship.

If the ship gets into an accident or is delayed and the car or jewelry gets damaged or lost, the marine insurance would pay for the repairs or replacement of the car and the jewelry.
