§ 8581 Cemetery Dedication Removal Notice

Key Takeaways

  • •If a cemetery wants to stop using part of its land for burials, they must tell the public by putting a notice in the local newspaper once a week for three weeks.
  • •They also have to put up copies of the notice in three easy-to-see spots on the land they want to stop using.
  • •The notice must say exactly which part of the cemetery they want to change, confirm no bodies are buried there (or that all bodies have been moved), and tell when and where the hearing about this change will happen.

Example

A small town cemetery wants to turn an old, empty section of its land into a park. No one has been buried there for over 50 years.

The cemetery must put a notice in the town newspaper for three weeks in a row. They also have to put up signs in three obvious spots around that empty section. The notice must describe the land, say no one is buried there, and tell people when and where they can go to a meeting to talk about it.
