§ 80400 Brownfield Contamination Loan Program

Key Takeaways

  • •The government has a program to lend money to people who want to check if old or unused properties are unsafe because of pollution.
  • •This money can only be used for a special kind of safety check called a 'preliminary endangerment assessment'.
  • •The loan cannot be used for a basic pollution check (Phase I assessment) or for the government's work in overseeing the safety check.

Example

Imagine there's an old, empty factory in your town that nobody uses. Someone wants to buy it to turn it into a park, but they're worried the ground might be polluted and unsafe.

The government can lend money to this person to help them pay for a special check to see if the factory land is really unsafe. But they can't use this loan to pay for a basic pollution check or for the government's work in watching over the process.
