§ 41950 Gasoline Tank Vapor Control

Key Takeaways

  • •Big gasoline tanks (250 gallons or more) must have special equipment to stop fumes from escaping when filling them.
  • •Old tanks installed before December 31, 1970, don’t need to follow this rule.
  • •Tanks used only for farm equipment don’t need to follow this rule.
  • •The tank must either have a fill pipe under the liquid, a special vapor recovery system, or another approved method to control fumes.

Example

A gas station installs a new 300-gallon gasoline tank to store fuel for cars.

The gas station must make sure the tank has a special fill pipe that stays underwater when filling or another approved system to stop gasoline fumes from escaping into the air. If they don’t, they could be breaking the law.
