§ 2014 District Formation Approval Process

Key Takeaways

  • •If enough people or a government group ask for a new district, a special group (the commission) starts the process to create it.
  • •The commission can stop the process if most people in the area say they don’t want the new district.
  • •If most people don’t protest, the commission can either create the district right away or let the people vote on it first.
  • •If a vote is needed, the commission tells the county to set up the election.

Example

A neighborhood wants to create a new district to get better local services, like trash pickup or street repairs.

The neighbors collect enough signatures to ask for the new district. The commission checks if most people in the area are against it. If not, the commission can either create the district right away or hold a vote to let everyone decide.
