§ 18091 Vehicle Title Certificate Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •The car title paper has important info about the car and who owns it.
  • •It lets you sell or give the car to someone else.
  • •The new owner can use it to put the car in their name.
  • •The paper might not show all the money owed on the car, so check with the DMV to be sure.

Example

You buy a used car from a friend.

The title paper your friend gives you has their name and car details. You use it to put the car in your name. But if your friend forgot to pay for a car loan, the title might not show that. You should check with the DMV to make sure the car is really free to sell.
