§ 17023 Employee Housing Building Exemptions

Key Takeaways

  • •Old buildings for workers don't have to follow new construction rules unless the government says so.
  • •Rules about how to use, keep up, and live in worker housing apply to all buildings, even old ones.
  • •Some building rules expired in 1985 unless they were updated or replaced by newer rules.

Example

A farm has old houses for workers built in 1980. In 2020, new rules say all worker houses must have fire sprinklers.

The farm doesn’t have to add sprinklers to the old houses because they were built before the new rule. But the farm must still follow rules about keeping the houses safe and clean for workers.
