§ 128736 Emergency Care Data Reporting

Key Takeaways

  • •Hospitals must record specific details about every patient who visits the emergency room, like their age, address, and what’s wrong with them.
  • •The hospital must keep personal info (like Social Security numbers) private and cannot share it publicly.
  • •If the hospital shares this info with the state as required, they can’t get in trouble if someone misuses the private details.
  • •These rules started in 2004 and follow national standards for how this data is collected.

Example

A kid breaks their arm at school and goes to the hospital.

The hospital writes down the kid’s age, where they live, and what happened (like ‘fell on the playground’). They also note if the kid’s family will pay with insurance or another way. But they won’t tell anyone the kid’s name or Social Security number—those stay secret.
