§ 12003 Fire Protection Authority Definitions

Key Takeaways

  • •The 'chief' is the boss of fire protection in an area. This could be the Director of Forestry and Fire Protection, the head of a local fire department, or even the county sheriff if there's no fire department.
  • •On state-owned land, the 'chief' is the fire boss for that area. If there's no fire boss, the State Fire Marshal is in charge.
  • •The local government can pick someone to be the 'chief' if the current fire boss or sheriff asks them to.

Example

There's a big forest fire on state-owned land, and there's no local fire department responsible for that area.

In this case, the State Fire Marshal is the 'chief' and is in charge of putting out the fire.
