§ 114093 Raw Food Risk Disclosure

Key Takeaways

  • •If a restaurant serves raw or undercooked food like sushi, rare burgers, or runny eggs, they must warn customers that it could make them sick.
  • •The warning must be in writing, like on the menu or a sign, and clearly say which foods are raw or undercooked.
  • •The warning should also tell customers they can ask for more safety info if they want it.
  • •This rule is for foods like beef, eggs, fish, pork, and shellfish that aren’t fully cooked to kill germs.

Example

You go to a restaurant and order a burger. The menu says you can get it 'rare' or 'medium-rare.'

The restaurant must have a note on the menu, like an asterisk (*) next to the burger, saying something like, 'Eating undercooked beef can make you sick, especially if you’re already sick or have health problems.' They also have to tell you that you can ask for more info about food safety.
