§ 111755 Cosmetic Color Additive Labeling

Key Takeaways

  • •If a makeup product has color in it, its label and package must follow special rules.
  • •These rules don’t apply to hair dyes, even if they have color.
  • •If the rules aren’t followed, the makeup is considered misbranded (which means it’s not allowed to be sold like that).

Example

You buy a bright blue lipstick, but the box doesn’t say what’s in it or how to use it safely.

This lipstick would be misbranded because it has color but doesn’t follow the labeling rules. The store could get in trouble for selling it.
