§ 110839 Organic Cosmetic Labeling Rules

Key Takeaways

  • •If a cosmetic product in California is sold as 'organic' but has less than 70% organic stuff (not counting water or salt), it can't just say 'organic' on the front.
  • •The product must list each organic ingredient with the word 'organic' next to it or use a symbol (like an asterisk) that explains which ingredients are organic.
  • •The product must also show the percentage of organic ingredients on the back label if the organic ingredients are listed.

Example

A face cream sold in California says 'organic' on the bottle but only 60% of its ingredients are organic.

The face cream can't just say 'organic' on the front. It must list the organic ingredients with the word 'organic' next to them or use a symbol like an asterisk to show which ones are organic. It also needs to show the percentage of organic ingredients (60%) on the back label.
