§ 110820 Organic Product Composition Rules

Key Takeaways

  • •If something is sold as 'organic,' it must follow special rules set by the NOP.
  • •The product must be made only from farm stuff, except for a few things like water, air, and salt.
  • •A tiny bit (less than 5%) of non-organic or non-farm stuff can be added if it's allowed by the US Secretary of Agriculture.
  • •The rules don’t count the weight of water or salt when checking the 5% limit.

Example

A company sells a jar of organic tomato sauce.

The sauce must be made mostly from organic tomatoes and other farm-grown ingredients. It can have a little bit of non-organic spices (less than 5% of the total weight, not counting water or salt), but only if those spices are on the allowed list. If they add too much non-organic stuff or use something not on the list, they can’t call it organic.
