§ 108870 Tableware Manufacturer Identification

This law says that all plates, cups, and other tableware sold in California must have the name of the company that made or imported them permanently marked on them.

Key Takeaways

  • •All tableware sold in California must have the maker's or importer's name on it.
  • •The name must be permanently marked, like baked into the dish so it won't wash off.
  • •This rule doesn't apply to dishes that don't have lead or cadmium in them.
  • •Really small dishes or odd-shaped ones don't need the name if they have a special trademark or are part of a set where other pieces have the name.

Example

You buy a set of dishes from a store.

Each plate and bowl in the set should have the name of the company that made them marked on the bottom. If they don't, the store or company could get in trouble.
