§ 106625 Local Health Department Staffing

This law lets a local health department hire full‑time registered environmental health specialists to enforce health rules, and also allows them to hire trainees under supervision for up to three years if the trainee has the required education letter.

Key Takeaways

  • •Only people who are registered environmental health specialists can be hired full‑time for enforcement duties.
  • •Trainees can be hired, but only under the supervision of a registered specialist and for a maximum of three years.
  • •Before a trainee is hired, the department must give a current evaluation letter confirming the trainee meets the education qualifications in § 106660.

Example

A city hires a certified environmental health specialist to inspect restaurants for food safety, and also hires a trainee who works under the specialist for two years after getting a department letter confirming the trainee meets the education requirements.

The specialist can work full‑time and enforce health laws. The trainee can work under the specialist for no more than three years, but only if the department has given a current evaluation letter saying the trainee’s education meets the law’s standards.
