§ 102225 State Marriage Certificate Review

The State Registrar checks marriage certificates from county offices and can ask for missing info; if they don't send the certificate back within 90 days, they must accept it as it is.

Key Takeaways

  • •The registrar must review each marriage certificate for completeness.
  • •If something is missing, the registrar can request the needed information.
  • •The registrar must return any incomplete certificate to the county within 90 days, or else must file it as received.

Example

A county recorder sends a marriage certificate that leaves out the bride's middle name.

The State Registrar will ask the county for the missing middle name. If the county doesn't get the corrected certificate back within 90 days, the registrar will file the original certificate even though it’s missing the middle name.
