§ 6811 District Formation Petition

This law tells you how to start a new district by getting a petition signed and filed with the county board.

Key Takeaways

  • •You must bring the petition to a regular meeting of the county board of supervisors.
  • •The petition needs signatures from at least 5% of registered voters who actually voted in the most recent governor election.
  • •You don’t have to file the original petition; a certified copy is enough for each county involved.

Example

A neighborhood wants to create a new fire protection district.

They collect signatures from at least five percent of the people who voted for the governor in the last election, then they send a certified copy of that petition to the board of supervisors in each county that the district would cover.
