§ 56877 Annexation Voter Approval Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •If a big piece of land (with lots of value or voters) wants to join a district, the people in the district might get to vote on it.
  • •The big piece of land must have at least half the value of all the land in the district, or half the voters, for this vote to happen.
  • •The vote is only for the people already living in the district, not the new area.
  • •This rule helps make sure the people in the district get a say if a big change is coming.

Example

A small town with 100 voters wants to join a nearby city with 150 voters.

Since the small town has almost half the voters (100 out of 150), the people in the city might get to vote on whether the town can join them.

(Added by Stats. 2001, Ch. 667, Sec. 17. Effective January 1, 2002.)
