§ 56811 Special District Appropriations Limits

Key Takeaways

  • •When a new special district is created, the commission sets a temporary spending limit for the first year based on expected tax money.
  • •The spending limit is adjusted for changes in the cost of living and population.
  • •After the first year, the district's leaders set a permanent spending limit based on the actual tax money received, adjusted for cost of living and population changes.
  • •The permanent spending limit is voted on in the next district election.

Example

A new school district is formed in a growing town.

The commission first guesses how much tax money the district will get in its first year and sets a temporary spending limit. After the first year, the district leaders look at the actual tax money received, adjust it for the rising cost of living and more people moving in, and then set a permanent spending limit. The town's voters then approve this limit in the next election.
