§ 53198 Property Assessment Liens

Key Takeaways

  • •If you don't pay certain fees or penalties related to your property, the government can put a lien on it.
  • •This lien means you can't sell or refinance your property until you pay what you owe.
  • •The lien doesn't apply to government-owned property, only to private property.
  • •The lien stays in place until you pay the full amount or the property is sold to cover the debt.

Example

You own a house, and the city charges you a fee for street repairs in your neighborhood. You don’t pay the fee or the extra penalties that add up over time.

The city can put a lien on your house. This means you can’t sell your house or take out a new loan on it until you pay what you owe. If you never pay, the city could eventually force a sale of your house to get the money.
