§ 32036 Member Contributions Upon Separation

Key Takeaways

  • •If you leave your county job before retiring (and it's not because you died or got permanently disabled), the money you put into the retirement fund stays there.
  • •If you leave because you died or got permanently disabled, you or your family get back all the money you put in, plus half of the interest it earned.
  • •If you put money into the system before a specific date in 1947, you get that money back the same way as if you left because of death or disability.

Example

John works for the county and has been putting money into the retirement fund. He quits his job to move to another state.

Since John left his job for a reason other than death or permanent disability, the money he put into the retirement fund stays there and he doesn't get it back.
