§ 29130 Fund Balance Appropriation Authority

Key Takeaways

  • •The board can decide to use extra money they have saved, but they need a big vote (four-fifths of them must agree).
  • •They can use money that was saved for special things, but not the main savings or money they can't spend.
  • •They can also use extra money they get that wasn't planned, like if they get more money than they thought they would.

Example

Imagine your school has a bake sale and makes more money than they expected. The school board can decide to use that extra money for something else, like buying new books, but only if almost all of them agree.

The school board can use the extra money from the bake sale because it wasn't planned in their budget. But they need a big vote to decide how to spend it.
