§ 27321 Recorder Return Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •When you record a document (like a deed for a house), the recorder's office must write down where it's saved and send it back to you.
  • •If the document shows a change in who owns something (like a house), and it doesn't have a special ownership statement, the recorder must either send that statement with the document or tell the tax office about it.
  • •This helps make sure the government knows who owns what for taxes.

Example

You buy a house, and your lawyer records the deed (the paper that says you own it now) at the county office.

The county office will write down where they saved your deed, mail it back to you, and if you forgot to include a paper saying you own it now, they’ll either send you that paper or tell the tax people about it.
