§ 23555 County Consolidation Ballot Format

Key Takeaways

  • •This law is about how ballots should look for two specific votes: one about combining areas (consolidation) and one about picking a county seat.
  • •For the consolidation vote, the ballot must have 'For consolidation Yes' and 'For consolidation No' options. Voters mark their choice with a cross (+).
  • •For the county seat vote, the ballot must have 'For [name of county seat] as county seat Yes' and 'For [name of county seat] as county seat No' options. Voters also mark their choice with a cross (+).
  • •This law was added in 1974 to make sure these votes are clear and fair.

Example

Imagine your town is voting on whether to merge with a nearby town to share services like schools and trash pickup.

On the ballot, you would see two options: 'For consolidation Yes' and 'For consolidation No.' You would put a cross (+) next to 'Yes' if you want the towns to merge, or next to 'No' if you don't. The same kind of setup would be used if your county is voting on where the main government office should be.
