§ 22771 Domestic Partnership Definition

Key Takeaways

  • •A domestic partnership is when two people live together and share a life like a married couple, but they aren't married.
  • •They must meet certain rules, like being at least 18 years old and not already married to someone else.
  • •Some workplaces or groups had their own rules for domestic partnerships before the year 2000, and those rules still count.

Example

Two people live together, share money, and take care of each other but don't want to get married.

If they meet the rules, like being adults and not married to others, the law says they can be domestic partners. This means they might get some of the same rights as married couples, like visiting each other in the hospital.
